Work on the American M4 Sherman medium tank started in 1941, with subsequent production taking place in 10 US factories and one Canadian. Although relatively unsophisticated, and lacking the firepower and armoured protection of the heavier German tanks that proved to be its main opponents during the Second World War, it had the advantage of being simple to build, reliable and easy to drive, and, with 49,500 constructed, was more numerous than the Getman Tiger or Panther.
During the Second World War. Shermans served with the US Army and Marine Corps, the Brrdsh and Commonwealth Armies, the Soviet Union, the Free French, the Polish government-in-exile, and the armies of Brazil and China. Many remained in service decades beyond the end of the war, notably seeing action on both sides during The Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, and with the Israeli Defence Force during the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973.
